Concert & Celebration featuring Carlos del Junco and the Blues Mongrels

Concert & Celebration featuring Carlos del Junco and the Blues Mongrels

‘Be like the flower, turn your face to the sun.’ -Kahlil Gibran

Who better to honour the First Day of Summer than farmers! Here at Headwaters Farm we celebrate this day for the sun’s life-giving force and the abundance of plants, animals and people who receives it’s energy! The solstice has been marked by many civilizations over millennia: the Mayan and Aztecs erecting stone monuments that align withe the solstice sun; the ancient Greek festival for Cronus, the god of agriculture; the Celtic pagan ritual of harvesting plants on this day; and Indigenous peoples worldwide thanking Mother Earth for her gifts. We do it our own way!

6:00 Pizza Dinner (optional)

Wood-fired pizza, farm-fresh salad, herbal iced tea, sweet treat

7:00 Open Air Concert – Carlos Del Junco and the Blues Mongrels (bring your own lawn chairs and refreshments)

“To say Carlos only plays the harmonica is like saying “Jimi Hendrix only plays guitar”. He blows the blues harp through a prism — suddenly it seems he’s holding every color in the musical rainbow right there in his hands.”

9:00 Burning of the Goat and Drum Circle/Jam Session (optional)

As the sun lays its weary head to rest, we light up our wooden edifice of a goat for the biggest bonfire around! Bring out your instrument and help make beautiful beats and harmonies to end our day of celebration. Roasted marshmallows and hot chocolate on order!

Summer Solstice

This was when the whole world measured time
This is when the light would turn around
This is where the past would come undone
and the spinning earth will mark a new beginning
Let’s go back in time, to when it all began
To the breaking of new dawns
Where moments bright with fire, would light the chanting song
Where pagans worshipped sun, and danced among the trees
Wore strange masks of covered straw, and blessed cold ash with awe
Wreaths hung upon the door against all spirit’s, dire
and when the winter’s grasp let go, the sun reversed the pyre
This was when the whole world measured time
This is when the light would turn around
So that spring arrives, and seeds will sprout and grow
Oh, radiant sun, stretch the day, shorten night
Return earth’s darkness into light
This is where the light will turn around
And this was where the past has come undone”
